Civil Engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, construction, and maintenance of the built environment, including structures, transportation systems, and infrastructure such as bridges, roads, and water systems. It combines principles of mathematics, physics, and materials science with practical design and construction knowledge. This bachelor's degree is taught in English at Politecnico di Milano, in Milano, Italy, and lasts three years. Foundational coursework in civil engineering typically covers structural mechanics, materials science, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, and surveying, alongside mathematics and physics courses that underpin engineering analysis. As students progress, they encounter more applied subjects such as structural design, construction management, and infrastructure planning, learning to apply theoretical principles to the design of buildings, roads, bridges, and other civil works while accounting for safety, cost, and environmental considerations. The discipline also increasingly incorporates topics such as sustainable construction practices and the use of digital tools for design and project management, reflecting how the profession has evolved to address environmental and technological change. Graduates of civil engineering programs pursue careers as structural engineers, construction managers, infrastructure planners, and consultants working on projects ranging from residential buildings to large public works. Many go on to further specialization through graduate study or professional licensure, since civil engineering practice in many countries requires additional certification beyond a first degree. Based in Milano, one of Italy's major cities and an established center for technical education, the program is delivered entirely in English, offering an internationally oriented foundation for students planning careers in the design and construction of infrastructure and the built environment.
