La Fémis

Master in Département Montage

Paris, FranceTaught in FrenchOpen to international students

About the Program

The Montage (Editing) département is one of the seven specializations of La Fémis's four-year cursus principal. It is run by directors Catherine Zins and Annette Dutertre and admits six students per intake through the concours général.

Teaching combines technical training with narrative theory, treating editing as a decisive stage of mise en scène rather than a purely technical finishing step. A creative approach to editing is taught alongside a full command of the post-production chain, for both picture and sound. Students alternate theoretical study with practical exercises on real film sequences, examining choices of space, performance, narrative mode and aesthetics.

The département builds regular exchange with other départements, particularly through the large cross-department fiction and documentary shoots on which editing students work with directing students.
