Applied physics uses the principles of physics to address practical problems in engineering, materials science, and technology, covering topics such as condensed matter physics, optics, electronics, and materials characterization. Doctoral study in applied physics typically combines advanced coursework in specialized physics topics with an extended, original research project, often conducted in a laboratory setting, culminating in a dissertation that contributes new findings on a specific physical system or technological application. Graduates with doctoral training in applied physics pursue careers as researchers in academia, semiconductor and electronics industries, materials science companies, and government or industrial research laboratories, where they work on problems ranging from new materials development to device physics and instrumentation. The field bridges fundamental physics and practical engineering application, and doctoral graduates are typically equipped to move between theoretical understanding and applied, technology-oriented research. This doctoral program is offered by Tunghai University, located in central Taiwan, with instruction conducted in English, allowing international students to pursue advanced physics research within a Taiwanese university setting. As part of the university's science departments, the program connects applied physics study with related fields in materials science and engineering. Applicants are generally expected to hold a strong background in physics or a closely related physical science, along with readiness for sustained, independent laboratory-based research. For students aiming toward research careers in physics, materials science, or related technology fields, this program offers a route into doctoral study in Taiwan taught in English, situated within a university with an established science and engineering community.
