The Department of Mathematics at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), located in Nam-gu, South Korea, offers a combined master's and doctorate program taught in English for students pursuing original research in pure or applied mathematics. Depending on a student's area of focus, doctoral study can involve algebra, analysis, geometry, topology, differential equations, or probability theory, as well as applied areas such as numerical methods and mathematical modeling used in physics, engineering, or data science. Because the master's and doctorate stages are combined, students move through a single sequence of coursework and research rather than applying separately for each degree, working closely with a faculty advisor as their research focus develops. Students work to identify open problems, develop rigorous proofs or computational approaches, and produce a dissertation that adds new understanding to their chosen subfield. Coursework at this level deepens a student's command of advanced mathematical theory, while research seminars expose candidates to problems currently being studied within the broader mathematical community. The coursework phase of this combined program spans four years, with new students admitted in the middle of February or the beginning of September, giving international applicants some choice in timing. Graduates commonly pursue careers as university faculty, researchers at mathematics or statistics institutes, or specialists in industries such as finance, data science, and engineering that depend on advanced mathematical modeling. POSTECH's research-focused environment and its concentration of science and engineering departments give doctoral mathematics students opportunities to collaborate across disciplines throughout the extended combined program.
