About the Program

UNIST, formally the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, offers a bachelor's degree through its Department of Physics, taught in English in Ulsan, South Korea. Physics is the study of matter, energy, and the fundamental forces that govern how the universe behaves, and an undergraduate program in the subject generally covers classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and often an introduction to modern topics such as condensed matter or particle physics. Laboratory components let students test theoretical predictions experimentally, building skills in measurement, instrumentation, and data analysis that carry over into many technical careers. Because physics develops strong quantitative and analytical habits, graduates commonly move into semiconductor and materials industries, renewable energy, aerospace, telecommunications, and scientific instrumentation, as well as software and engineering roles that value rigorous problem-solving. Ulsan's concentration of heavy industry and manufacturing gives physics graduates practical opportunities close to home, while the broader transferability of physics training also supports careers in finance, data analysis, and technology more generally. Many students go on to graduate study in physics or engineering, using an undergraduate research project as a foundation for further specialization. The eight-term program structure allows students to progress steadily from introductory mechanics through advanced electives, often including a research or project component in the later terms. With coursework delivered fully in English, international students can pursue a demanding physics curriculum in South Korea without a separate Korean-language track, and the program admits new students each September.
