The Department of Global Studies (SPSF) at Sophia University offers a four-year bachelor's degree taught in English, with admission each September. Sophia University, located in Tokyo, is one of Japan's private universities and enrols international students from more than sixty countries, with faculty members drawn from more than twenty countries. The Global Studies program brings students into a classroom setting alongside Japanese and international peers, studying issues that cross national borders. Coursework in a global studies degree typically spans international relations, comparative politics, economics, sociology, and regional area studies, building the analytical tools needed to interpret political, economic, and cultural developments across different parts of the world. Students examine how governments, international organizations, businesses, and civil society groups interact on issues such as trade, migration, human rights, and environmental policy, while also gaining grounding in research methods and cross-cultural communication. Because the program is delivered in English, students from outside Japan can pursue the full four-year curriculum without needing prior Japanese language study, though many choose to study Japanese alongside their major given the Tokyo campus setting. Graduates of global studies programs commonly move into careers in diplomacy, international organizations, multinational business, journalism, nonprofit management, and further graduate study in political science, international relations, or public policy. Studying in Tokyo places students in a global business and political hub, offering access to embassies, international organizations, and multinational company headquarters. The four-year structure follows the standard bachelor's timeline, allowing students to combine foundational coursework in the early years with specialized seminars and independent research as they progress toward graduation.
