About MSc Development Economics

The MSc in Development Economics at the University of Göttingen is a research-oriented four-semester programme dedicated to the study of economic development, poverty, and inequality. The programme draws on teaching and research experience from two faculties — the Faculty of Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences — and covers macro and micro development issues, econometrics, and rural development. Students can specialise in quantitative economics or agricultural economics. The 120-ECTS curriculum includes three compulsory economics modules (Development Economics I and II, Socioeconomics of Rural Development) and one compulsory econometrics module typically completed in the first two semesters, followed by specialisation modules (12 credits each), profile and elective courses, and one compulsory seminar chosen from a list of eligible seminars in development or agricultural economics. The programme also offers opportunities for internships at development cooperation institutions and international organisations, field work in developing countries, and a semester abroad at partner universities in regions including South Africa, China, Indonesia, Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil. The master's thesis carries 30 ECTS. German nationals with a German high school and undergraduate education must complete a mandatory semester or field studies abroad; international students are exempt. The programme was established in 2011 and starts in the winter semester with no tuition fees. The degree is offered at the University of Göttingen in Göttingen, Germany.
