About PhD in DEWIN – Dynamics of Host-Pathogen Interactions

For PhD in DEWIN – Dynamics of Host-Pathogen Interactions, the application deadline is 1 Mar.

The DEWIN PhD programme — Dynamics of Host-Pathogen Interactions — was launched in autumn 2010 by the Center for Infection Biology at Hannover Medical School. The three-year programme, taught in English over six semesters, trains scientists to investigate the complex interactions between hosts and pathogens using the combined tools of immunology, cell biology, and molecular biology. The first semester builds a common foundation in immunology, microbiology, virology, and cell biology for students entering from medicine, veterinary medicine, biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology backgrounds. The following four half-year modules deepen knowledge in key infection biology areas, while students also learn to examine their findings critically and present them to academic audiences. The final two modules are focused on completing the PhD thesis, alongside participation in lectures and events from research consortia funded by the EU, the German Research Council, and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Students take part in at least three method-based lab courses of up to five days each and attend one to two specialist conventions during their studies. Each student is supported by a supervisory group consisting of a primary supervisor and two co-supervisors. All students enrolled in DEWIN automatically become part of the Hannover Biomedical Research School. The programme accepts 20 students per year after a rigorous selection process, and scholarships are available from Hannover Medical School and through the DAAD. The programme is based at Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany.
