Diploma in Nautical Studies

The Diploma in Nautical Studies, run by the Singapore Maritime Academy, trains students in navigation, seamanship and maritime safety using simulators and hands-on sea experience. It leads to the Certificate of Competency (CoC) Class 3 qualification needed to work toward becoming a ship master. The three-year course covers ship operations, marine safety, electronic navigation systems and emergency protocols, and includes a 12-month sea-training phase aboard a vessel. Graduates move into sea-going roles such as navigating officer, or shore-based roles such as ship planner or maritime operations executive, and can progress to further maritime study or a related engineering and business degree.
