The Doctoral Course in Advanced Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Applied Physics track, is hosted by the University of Fukui, situated on the western coast of central Japan not far from Kyoto and Osaka. The university's guiding policy is "KAKUCHI, the driving force for the future of people and society," and it operates across three campuses, Bunkyo, Matsuoka, and Tsuruga, with four schools spanning Education, Medical Sciences, Engineering, and Global and Community Studies; enrollment stands at about 5,000 students, roughly half of the university students across Fukui prefecture. Taught in English, this doctoral track runs three years, with admission in October or April. Applied Physics at the doctoral level typically covers condensed matter physics, optics and photonics, semiconductor physics, quantum phenomena, and computational and experimental methods for studying physical systems. Students pursue independent research under faculty guidance, aiming to produce a dissertation that advances understanding in a chosen sub-field, often in collaboration with engineering or materials science groups given the interdisciplinary structure of the wider doctoral program. This level of study assumes a master's degree in physics, applied physics, or a closely related discipline, and blends seminar coursework with sustained laboratory or theoretical research. Graduates commonly move into research careers in semiconductor and electronics industries, optics and photonics companies, materials science laboratories, and academic or government research institutes, as well as postdoctoral positions. Since the track is delivered in English, prospective students are not required to demonstrate Japanese language ability for their studies, though Fukui's more modest international community compared with Tokyo or Osaka makes some Japanese useful for daily life outside the university.
