The Doctoral Course in Advanced Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Electrical and Electronics Engineering track, runs at the University of Fukui, located on Japan's central western coast within reach of Kyoto and Osaka. The university follows the policy "KAKUCHI, the driving force for the future of people and society," maintains three campuses (Bunkyo, Matsuoka, and Tsuruga), and organizes teaching across four schools: Education, Medical Sciences, Engineering, and Global and Community Studies, with around 5,000 students enrolled, about half of the university-level population in the prefecture. This English-taught doctoral track lasts three years, with intake in October or April. Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the doctoral level covers areas such as power systems, semiconductor devices, signal processing, control theory, and electronic circuit and systems design. Candidates conduct supervised, original research toward a dissertation, often engaging with adjacent fields such as mechanical systems or applied physics given the program's interdisciplinary framing. Entry to this level of study generally requires a master's degree in electrical engineering, electronics, or a related discipline, and the course combines advanced seminars with extended laboratory or simulation-based research. Career outcomes for graduates span the electronics and semiconductor industries, power and energy systems, telecommunications, robotics and automation, and research positions in universities, national laboratories, or corporate research and development departments. Because instruction is in English, applicants are not required to show Japanese proficiency for their coursework, though everyday life in Fukui, a smaller city than Tokyo or Osaka, is easier with some knowledge of Japanese given the more limited size of the international community there.
