Doctoral Programme in History (4 yrs)

The Doctoral Programme in History trains researchers with the capacity for in-depth analysis of social and cultural phenomena within their historical context. The programme runs for four years starting in January 2027. Research topics are broad, but most dissertations concentrate on areas where Tampere University has developed particular strength: the history of modernisation, urbanisation and civil society, as well as international interaction and the history of everyday life in Finland and Europe. Alongside the dissertation itself, the programme aims to strengthen candidates' theoretical and methodological skills and introduce them to the research traditions of their field. It also develops the ability to reform practices and operate within multidisciplinary research communities. Graduates are well prepared to work as researchers or to take on demanding expert roles in administration, education and civil society.
