About Doctorat Design

The Doctorat Design programme is a 3-year research programme based at the Université de Saint-Étienne's University Design Lab. Students will develop expertise in design research, theory, and methods, with a focus on the cultural, social, and technical aspects of design. The programme is structured around a research thesis, which students must complete and defend in front of a jury, and supervised by experienced researchers. Students can specialise in areas such as design for social innovation, design for sustainability, or design for health.

This programme aims to foster critical thinking and creativity. It is intended for those who thrive in a research-intensive environment, and who wish to contribute to the advancement of design knowledge and practice. Research undertaken as part of the Doctorat Design may be undertaken in relation to the campus's Design Lab.

The Doctorat Design is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and follows the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) framework.
