SACRe ('Sciences, Arts, Création, Recherche') is a doctoral programme run jointly by La Fémis, four other grandes écoles nationales de création — the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique (CNSAD), the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris (CNSMDP), the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (ENSAD) and the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (ENSBA) — and the École normale supérieure (ENS), under the Université de recherche Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL). Created at La Fémis in 2013, it closely couples the production of artistic works with a problematised research approach drawing on fields ranging from the humanities and social sciences to exact and applied sciences and aesthetics.

La Fémis selects one doctoral candidate per year, funded for the three years of the thesis by a doctoral allowance ('allocation doctorale'), a full-time commitment largely exclusive of other professional activity. Each thesis is co-supervised by two directors: a 'directeur de thèse' qualified to supervise research for the scientific/theoretical side, and a filmmaker, artist or film professional supervising the artistic side. Doctoral candidates take part in the research activities of La Fémis and the SACRe host research team, attend a fortnightly seminar, and undergo annual progress reviews.

At the end of the three years, subject to authorisation, the candidate defends a thesis combining a corpus of works produced during the doctorate, closely tied to the research question, with a written dissertation, and is awarded the national title of Docteur.
