About the Program

The Master's programme in Ecumenical and Extended Ecumenical Studies (MESt) at the University of Bonn covers the plurality of Christian traditions and churches, Christian unity concepts, the role of religious difference in cultural contexts, and the conditions for respectful interreligious engagement. Students are introduced to biblical and theological interpretation and to developments in church history, with particular attention to German-language theological scholarship. The programme is offered in two durations: 2 semesters for the Ecumenical Studies track and 4 semesters for the Extended Ecumenical Studies track, both starting in the winter semester. Teaching is provided by professors and lecturers from the Faculties of Protestant and Catholic Theology, Philosophy, the Seminary of Old Catholic Theology, and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany, in cooperation with the Centre for Religion and Society (ZERG) at the University of Bonn. The curriculum combines compulsory and elective modules with lectures, seminars, an internship or ecumenical fieldwork, and a Master's thesis.
