Emergency Nursing

The programme runs over 26 weeks and is divided into two semesters, each comprising two mandatory modules – an Emergency Nursing Foundation Module and a Clinical Placement – each worth 10 credits. This structure moves the learner from theoretical foundations in the first semester to hands-on practice in the second. Students engage in a blended learning format that combines weekly lectures, online learning activities and skills practice sessions. Two compulsory practical days are held on the Letterkenny campus, and a clinical placement in an emergency department provides real-world experience. Assessment is through written assignments and a Competency Development Workbook rather than formal examinations. The Emergency Nursing Foundation Module covers topics such as triage, sepsis, cardiovascular assessment, mental health and quality improvement, while the Clinical Placement module gives direct patient-care experience in a busy emergency setting. Continuous assessment ensures that progress is monitored throughout the course.
