About the Program

The Environmental Sciences BSc at Justus Liebig University Giessen provides interdisciplinary training with a strong natural sciences focus. Core subjects include biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, soil science, environmental chemistry, and climate science, supplemented by analytical, statistical, and digital competencies. The programme integrates theory and practice through fieldwork, laboratory training, and project-based learning. The programme runs over 6 semesters starting in the winter semester. The first four semesters cover 20 mandatory core modules establishing the scientific knowledge base. In the fifth semester, students choose five optional profile modules to deepen or broaden their focus; two of these may be replaced by a work placement. The final semester centres on the Future Lab study project, in which students independently plan and carry out a project, alongside the Bachelor's thesis supported by an accompanying thesis module. Two mandatory German language modules are included in the programme. Graduates are qualified for positions in the public sector, government agencies, corporate sustainability and environmental management, quality assurance, and national or international environmental organisations, as well as for progression to a Master's degree.
