Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan

Master in Ethnology

Poznań, Poland Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The master's programme in Ethnology, with a focus on Speciality Differences and Transitional Processes, is offered by Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. Taught in English over two years (four semesters), it costs 2,000 PLN per year. Poznan Ethnology is described as one of the oldest and best institutions in the country in the field of ethnological sciences. The two-year master's studies in social and cultural anthropology are conducted as part of the international CREOLE programme (Cultural Differences and Transnational Processes). Coursework focuses mainly on the changes and challenges facing Central and Eastern Europe, while also addressing issues in contemporary societies elsewhere in the world. Participation in the CREOLE network gives students the opportunity to study and conduct research for two semesters at partner anthropological institutions in Maynooth, Vienna, Lyon, Bern, Ljubljana or Barcelona, adding an international mobility dimension to the Poznan-based coursework. Ethnology and social and cultural anthropology examine how societies organize themselves, produce meaning and respond to change, using methods that combine fieldwork, archival research and comparative analysis. Students in this programme are trained in these methods with a particular emphasis on the post-socialist transformations of Central and Eastern Europe, an area where Poznan's ethnology department has built up long-standing expertise. Graduates typically go on to careers in research, cultural heritage institutions, international organisations, journalism, or further doctoral study in anthropology or related social sciences. The CREOLE mobility option also gives graduates a network of contacts and comparative experience across several European academic centres, adding to the value of the degree for careers with an international dimension.
