One distinctive feature of this programme is the compulsory semester abroad, which gives students real-life experience in another science culture. The Master's programme is based on a forschungsorientierte ('research-oriented') approach, with a strong emphasis on extending students' knowledge of Europe's history from the Antique period to the present. The programme also aims to break down national perspectives of history. Students are encouraged to explore European and global dimensions of historical exchange and interconnection, while at the same time developing inter-cultural and interdisciplinary competence. The curriculum is designed to prepare students either for a career in academia or for work in institutions such as museums, publishers, or archive and documentation facilities.
