About the Program

The European Studies short course at Freie Universität Berlin introduces students to the fundamentals of the European Union and examines how it has evolved politically and economically over time. Topics include EU history, institutional structure, internal decision-making processes, questions of identity and democratic governance, and the geopolitical dimension of current events in Europe. The course also addresses EU relations with the United Kingdom following Brexit, transatlantic relations, EU engagement with China and Russia, migration, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sessions can be adjusted to reflect specific student interests. Morning sessions combine lectures, literature-based discussions, and working group presentations. Afternoon sessions involve visits to political institutions, embassies, and think tanks in Germany's political centre, where students can engage directly with international experts.
