FOKUS Life Sciences is a doctoral programme rooted in the Life Sciences expertise of the Faculty of Biology at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, with additional involvement from research groups across the faculties of medicine, psychology, chemistry and pharmacy, and physics. The programme spans 4 semesters and is designed as a fast track into doctoral research within the Graduate School of Life Sciences, which comprises more than 280 research groups. In the first semester, students complete three obligatory modules and, if strong grades are achieved, can begin a doctoral project as early as the second year. Students who do not meet the fast-track criteria may complete the programme as a standard Master's degree within two years. Remaining credits are earned through activities integral to doctoral study such as specialised lectures, conferences, seminars, journal clubs, and summer schools. The programme suits students who have a strong natural sciences foundation in biology, chemistry, or physics, hold or are close to completing a BSc, and have substantive experimental research experience through an experimental Bachelor's thesis or equivalent. Classroom-style instruction is minimal; students are expected to be highly independent, self-organised, and comfortable with a demanding workload in an interdisciplinary, international setting.
