French Language and Literature focuses on the French language and its literary tradition, covering texts and authors from a range of historical periods and genres. Typical coursework includes French grammar and composition, literary analysis, linguistics, and courses examining major French-language authors and literary movements, often supplemented by studies of French history and culture. As students progress, they build advanced proficiency in written and spoken French alongside the analytical skills needed to interpret literary texts within their historical and cultural context. Graduates commonly pursue careers in teaching, translation, publishing, diplomatic and cultural work, or tourism, and the degree also provides a basis for graduate study in French studies, linguistics, or comparative literature. This four-year bachelor's program is offered by Istanbul University in Istanbul, Turkey, and is taught in French, giving students sustained immersion in the language throughout their studies alongside literary and linguistic coursework. Istanbul University is one of Turkey's oldest universities, with a long-standing tradition in language and literature education. Approaching French language and literature from Istanbul offers students a distinct perspective informed by Turkey's own history of cultural and educational exchange with French-speaking countries. Over the course of the four-year program, students progress from foundational language instruction to advanced literary and linguistic study, developing the language fluency and analytical capabilities needed for careers or further academic study connected to the French language and its literary heritage.
