About PhD in Geography, Doctor (4 years)

Applications close 2026-04-30.

Doctoral studies in geography at the University of Oulu address questions at the intersection of environment, society, and spatial change: the impacts of climate change on Arctic nature and communities, the dynamics of regional growth and decline, service accessibility and modelling, border and identity transformation, and the conditions for sustainable economic development. Tourism geography and its local and global responsibilities is also a prominent area of inquiry. Students can specialise in regional development and regional policy, political geography, physical geography, tourism geographies, or geoinformatics. The program runs for four years and starts in January 2026. Research is carried out within the Geography Research Unit, which received an overall grade of outstanding in the University of Oulu's 2020 external research evaluation. The program offers doctoral researchers the capacity to engage with complex, sometimes 'wicked' research problems across a range of methodological and thematic traditions in geography. The program is based at the University of Oulu in Oulu, Finland.
