Graduates work as design or site engineers in geotechnical and structural engineering, employed by construction consultancies, infrastructure owners, and specialist engineering firms, and the qualification enables pursuit of Chartered Engineer registration. It also provides the up-skilling needed for civil engineers moving into or advancing within the geotechnical and structural domains. The programme’s distinctive attribute is full accreditation by Engineers Ireland, meeting the educational requirement for Chartered Engineer status and confirming that the curriculum aligns with professional standards.

The one-year full-time course starts in September and is divided into two stages. Semester 1 runs from September to December and delivers six taught modules – Geotechnical Engineering I, Soil-Structure Interaction, Design of Building Structures, Geotechnical Engineering II, Design of Bridge Structures and Research Methods – each worth 5 ECTS. Semester 2, from January to September, is devoted to a 60 ECTS research thesis where students develop a project in advanced geotechnical engineering, often in collaboration with industry partners. The thesis allows students to propose their own project and is assessed through a dissertation, oral and poster presentations, opening a pathway to PhD study.
