Students engage in language instruction through task-based learning and authentic cultural materials, progressing from foundational skills to advanced reading, writing, and speaking in German. They analyze German literature, film, and culture using historical, social, and political contexts. Courses include both language-focused instruction and content taught in English for broader access. The program supports study abroad in German-speaking countries, particularly through the UC Education Abroad Program in Berlin.

The major requires 12 courses totaling 48 units. Five upper-division courses must be completed at UCI, with two allowed abroad through approved study-abroad programs.
