Global and Interdisciplinary Studies, known as GIS, is a four-year bachelor's program at Hosei University in Tokyo, Japan, taught in English with admission each September. Hosei University was founded in 1880 and is one of Japan's historic universities, now made up of 15 undergraduate faculties and 38 departments, 15 graduate schools, and 2 professional graduate schools, all accredited by the Japanese government. The university has held Top Global University Project status since 2014, a government initiative funding 37 universities selected from around 800 nationwide, and financial support is available to enrolled students. An interdisciplinary global studies curriculum typically draws on international relations, sociology, economics, and area studies, allowing students to combine perspectives from several fields rather than following a single traditional discipline. Coursework in a program of this kind often includes global governance, cross-cultural studies, and research methods, with students able to shape part of their study plan around specific regional or thematic interests within global affairs. Over four years, the degree builds from introductory coursework across the social sciences toward more focused interdisciplinary electives. Graduates from interdisciplinary global studies programs pursue careers with international organizations, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, media, and multinational companies, as well as further graduate study in international relations or area studies. Tokyo offers GIS students access to embassies, international organizations, and companies with global operations, providing context for coursework centered on international and cross-cultural questions. Delivered fully in English, the program is designed for international students without requiring prior Japanese language study.
