The Heritage Studies doctoral programme at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg supports qualitative and quantitative research on the protection and use of cultural heritage in an international and interdisciplinary context. Research sits within the broad theme of Global Change and Transformation Processes and is affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning. Doctoral students pursue individual research in areas such as heritage conservation and management, architectural history, urban and regional planning, or civil engineering, while being part of an interdisciplinary group of doctoral researchers. The three-year programme requires completion of a compulsory curriculum of five modules amounting to 30 ECTS, alongside the written PhD thesis and an oral examination. The five modules address academic research and methods, status seminars, heritage studies progress reports, research colloquia, grant proposal writing, and thesis writing skills. Lectures and seminars are compulsory, and students must be present at the university during lecture periods. Research stays abroad can be incorporated into the schedule. Additional workshops on networking, subject-related qualification, scientific techniques, and transferable skills are offered through the BTU Graduate Research School. Applications can be submitted year-round, with enrolment possible in both summer and winter semesters.
