Time-travel to explore the human past The History Department of CUHK strives to promote world-class research and teaching in the field of historical studies. We put great emphasis on diversity and freedom in academic pursuits, student-centred education, the relevance of historical knowledge to daily life, and the cultivation of cross-cultural sensitivity and global-mindedness. Our curriculum highlights interdisciplinary learning with a thorough understanding of historical developments and changes in the global context. It provides solid training for studying history in a wide range of fields. In recent years, we have engaged in the development of comparative history and public history, indicating the salient features of cosmopolitanism and community awareness in higher education in Hong Kong. To achieve these goals, we offer a comprehensive programme that covers a wide array of topics on Chinese history, world history, and comparative and public history, with courses such as Daily Life in Han China, Digital History, Trans-Pacific Connections in East Asia, War and Society, Gender and History, the Cultural History of Food, and Museum and Heritage. Our students study history in various fields and from diverse, sometimes contradicting, perspectives to develop critical thinking and the skills of reading between the lines. We also encourage and nurture students to conduct in-depth studies on topics of their own interest.
