Industrial biotechnology is a cross-disciplinary field positioned at the intersection of natural sciences, engineering, and applied technology. The programme at Fulda University of Applied Sciences covers bioprocess engineering, cell culture technology, applied microbiology, and molecular biology, supported by a foundation in natural science and engineering fundamentals. Students can also choose from freely selectable specialisations including pharmaceutical biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, and bioinformatics. The programme runs over seven semesters, starting in the winter semester. The first two semesters build general engineering foundations, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, alongside management and scientific methods. From the second semester, biotechnology-specific modules such as cell biology, molecular biology, and genetic engineering are introduced. Students must complete a basic eight-week internship before the start of the fourth semester. Later semesters cover specialised areas including thermal and mechanical process engineering, hygiene and quality requirements, and law. The sixth semester includes a second internship, followed by the Bachelor's thesis. Applications in food, medicine, and pharmacy are central to the programme's focus. In food production, biotechnological methods support the development of products such as lactose-free foods.
