PhD in Integrated Engineering Course, Human Security Engineering Field

At Kyoto University, tuition fees are 535,800 JPY per year.

The Integrated Engineering Course, Human Security Engineering Field, is a five-year doctoral program taught in English at Kyoto University, located in Kyoto, Japan, with admission each October. Kyoto University was founded in 1897 and today comprises 10 faculties, 18 graduate schools, 12 research institutes, and 26 educational institutes, with about 3,000 of its roughly 22,300 students, from around 110 countries and regions, coming from overseas. This doctoral field applies engineering training to problems of human security, meaning the safety, wellbeing, and resilience of people facing risks such as natural disasters, environmental degradation, or infrastructure failure. Research within the field is interdisciplinary, drawing on structural and environmental engineering, disaster science, and humanitarian technology to address how engineered systems can reduce risk to communities rather than focusing narrowly on a single technical specialty. Doctoral candidates typically spend the first stages of the five-year course building research foundations before moving into sustained independent research under a faculty supervisor, culminating in a dissertation, often supported by fieldwork connected to disaster-affected or at-risk regions. Because the course is taught in English, it is designed for an international body of doctoral researchers working alongside Japanese faculty and students on human security-related engineering problems. Kyoto's status as a historic center of Japanese culture and academic life provides the setting for the university's laboratories and research facilities used in this field. Graduates commonly pursue research careers in disaster risk reduction, humanitarian engineering, environmental and infrastructure resilience, or roles with international organizations, government agencies, or universities focused on human security and engineering.
