Bachelor in Intellectual Disability Nursing

Accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, this four-year degree provides the academic and clinical basis for registration as an Intellectual Disability Nurse. The programme is delivered in partnership with the Health Service Executive in the Western region, giving students access to practice placements in specialist services. Students explore the principles of human rights, equality and person-centred care that underpin intellectual disability nursing, learning to support individuals across the life span, promote autonomy and facilitate community inclusion.

The curriculum combines nursing theory, science and social science modules, with a strong emphasis on practical skills taught through lectures, seminars, workshops and simulated clinical environments. Assessment includes essays, exams, presentations and observed nursing skills. Successful graduates receive a BSc (Hons) and are eligible to register with the NMBI, opening pathways to specialist practice or further study.
