SUNGKYUNKWAN UNIVERSITY (SKKU)

PhD in Intelligent Robotics

Jongno-gu, South Korea Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Intelligent Robotics doctoral program at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in Jongno-gu, South Korea, trains researchers to design, build, and control robotic systems capable of sensing, reasoning, and acting in complex environments. Doctoral coursework covers robot kinematics and dynamics, control theory, computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning as applied to robotics, with candidates choosing a dissertation topic that combines these areas into an original contribution to the field. Common research directions include autonomous mobile robots, robotic manipulation and grasping, human robot interaction, swarm and multi robot systems, and the integration of artificial intelligence into robotic decision-making. Because instruction is delivered in English, the program attracts engineering and computer science graduates from many countries who want to specialize in robotics research rather than a narrower discipline. After completing the degree, graduates typically take research positions in university robotics labs, corporate research and development divisions, or government-funded robotics and automation institutes, while others found or join robotics startups working on autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, or service robots. South Korea's manufacturing base and government investment in robotics and automation give doctoral students access to industry partners and applied testbeds for their research. The program runs for four years, with admission cycles in both March and September of every year, allowing candidates to plan their start date around other commitments. By the time students complete the doctorate, they have developed the technical depth in mechanics, control, perception, and artificial intelligence needed to lead independent robotics research, along with the English-language academic communication skills required to publish and present their work internationally.
