International Health is a two-year master's program at The University of Tokyo in Tokyo, Japan, taught in English, with entry available in April. The University of Tokyo is Japan's oldest national university, founded in 1877, and organizes education and research across ten faculties and fifteen graduate schools. At the master's level, the program introduces students to global health issues and health systems, covering areas such as epidemiology, public health policy, global health governance, health economics, and disease prevention and control across diverse regional contexts. Students typically complete a structured curriculum of core and elective coursework combined with a supervised research project or thesis, often applying epidemiological or health-systems analysis methods to a specific country or regional health question. The program draws students from backgrounds in medicine, public health, epidemiology, or the social sciences. A master's degree in international health prepares graduates for careers in global health organizations, government health ministries, nongovernmental organizations, public health research, and further doctoral study in the field, including the University of Tokyo's own doctoral program in International Health. Applicants must submit English proficiency test scores, choosing between TOEFL or IELTS; TOEIC is not accepted. An interview that includes an oral examination and presentation is required, though screening of documents is not required and no short essay or practical exam is required. There is no transfer system for the program, and pre-arrival admission is not offered, meaning accepted students must be in Japan before finalizing admission to the two-year master's program.
