This practice-oriented programme addresses the planning and construction of infrastructure for transport, water and waste management at urban and regional scales. It trains students to integrate economic, social, ecological and management requirements into infrastructure projects, with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches and international cooperation. Modules cover topics including transportation planning and modelling, regional and urban planning, economics, statistics and information processing, GIS and data acquisition, development policy, ecological aspects, energy supply, water and waste management, project appraisal, and financing. The programme spans 4 semesters, beginning in the winter semester, and admits a maximum of 35 students per course. The first semester introduces broadening fundamentals; the second offers elective modules. The third semester includes additional electives and an integrated case study in interdisciplinary infrastructure planning. The fourth semester is devoted to an individual Master's thesis on an interdisciplinary topic, which may address a problem relevant to the student's home country. The programme has been offered since 1983 and is based at the University of Stuttgart in Stuttgart, Germany.
