About Master in Iranian and Persianate Studies (MA)

The MA in Iranian and Persianate Studies at the University of Göttingen examines Iran and the Persianate world across a broad time span, from the Islamic conquest to the present. The programme provides conceptual frameworks, methods, and theoretical tools for independent work in specialist and interdisciplinary contexts. Course offerings cover a wide range of topics, with a particular focus on Indo-Persian history and culture; Kurdish language courses are also available. The programme can be taken as a 78 CP single honours major, a 42 CP major in combination with other subjects, a 36 CP module package, or an 18 CP second minor package. The 78 CP major includes intensive source study in modern or classical Persian and draws on courses from the Institute of Iranian Studies as well as neighbouring disciplines. Summer schools and student trips to the Persianate world are organised regularly. The 36 CP and 18 CP packages are taught in German and require knowledge of German at DSH 2 level. Instruction for the 78 CP and 42 CP majors is in English; written work may be submitted in English or German. Only students with sufficient knowledge of Persian may apply for those tracks. The programme runs over 4 semesters and is offered in both winter and summer semesters at the University of Göttingen.
