Tokyo University of Foreign Studies offers a Joint Doctoral Program for Sustainability Research, a three-year doctoral degree taught in English, based in Tokyo, with new students able to start in October or April. TUFS has long focused its research and teaching on the languages, cultures, and societies of regions around the world, and as it approaches the 150th anniversary of its founding, it describes its role as fostering people who can address global issues in an increasingly multilingual, multicultural world; the joint program extends that mission into interdisciplinary sustainability research undertaken with partner institutions. A doctoral program in sustainability research typically draws on multiple disciplines, including environmental science, economics, area studies, and policy analysis, to examine how societies manage natural resources, respond to environmental change, and pursue development that can be sustained over time. Candidates design an original research project under joint faculty supervision, often incorporating fieldwork or comparative study across regions, and produce a dissertation supported by conference presentations and academic publication. Graduates of sustainability-focused doctoral programs pursue research and teaching careers in universities, roles in international organizations and development agencies, and positions in government or non-governmental bodies working on environmental and resource policy. Completing the degree jointly through TUFS over three years combines the university's regional and language expertise with interdisciplinary training in sustainability, taught entirely in English.
