About the Program

Sogang University's Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) hosts a master's program in Korea & East Asia Studies focused on the region's political systems, economic development, and social change. The curriculum generally includes Korean politics and foreign relations, comparative East Asian economies, regional security issues, and historical and cultural studies that provide context for present-day developments in Korea, China, Japan, and other East Asian states. Students build the research and analytical skills used in diplomacy, policy research, journalism, and business roles that depend on understanding East Asia's political and economic landscape. The program is based at Sogang University in Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea, and is offered as a two-year master's degree through GSIS, admitting new cohorts in March and September of every year. Instruction is entirely in English, opening the program to an international group of students while placing them directly in Seoul, where they can engage with Korean institutions, media, and civil society as part of their studies. Because the program is embedded in a broader international studies school, students frequently combine regional coursework with classes in international relations, economics, or security, giving them a well-rounded foundation for interpreting East Asian affairs. Graduates typically move into careers in foreign service, international organizations, policy think tanks, journalism covering Asia, or corporate roles requiring regional expertise, and the program also supports students planning further academic research on Korea and East Asia.
