The programme is interdisciplinary, drawing on courses from over 14 departments across the social sciences and humanities. Students develop advanced proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese through structured language training. They study Latin America’s history, cultures, economies, and literatures using multiple disciplinary perspectives. The curriculum emphasizes critical analysis of research methods and theoretical frameworks from at least three academic fields.

Focus areas include History of Latin America, Latin American literatures, Cultural studies, Social movements, Gender and race in the Americas, Music and media in Latin America.

The major requires a total of 36 credits, including language courses, foundational courses in Latin American studies, and advanced coursework in at least two disciplines. Students complete a senior thesis or capstone project based on original research.

Graduates pursue roles in nonprofit organizations, law, higher education, and environmental sectors, including positions at institutions like the Smithsonian Institution and Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

Applicants must have completed at least one year of college-level Spanish or Portuguese. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Submission of a personal statement and a course plan approved by a faculty advisor is also required.

Wellesley was founded on the idea that women have an equal right to the best education in the country. The Class of 2029 included 77 international students, with 24 nations represented among non-U.S. citizens. Wellesley also offers a five-year joint B.A./M.A. program in international affairs through the Geneva Graduate Institute.
