    About Saint John's Seminary

Saint John's Seminary traces its origins to the Boston Ecclesiastical Seminary, established to prepare men for the Roman Catholic priesthood. Massachusetts granted the seminary a charter to award degrees in philosophy and divinity in 1883, and its first class arrived the following year. Today, the seminary serves eleven dioceses and five religious communities.

Academic offerings include the Bachelor of Philosophy, Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Theology, Master of Arts in Ministry, and Master of Theological Studies for the New Evangelization. Since 2017, affiliation with the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas has enabled the seminary to grant the Pontifical Degree of Sacrae Theologiae Baccalaureus. The Theological Institute prepares lay ecclesial ministers for parish service throughout New England and offers Catholic theology programs for laity, religious, and deacons.

The seminary is located in Brighton, a neighborhood of Boston. Saint John's Hall, built on Lake Street in 1884, contains classrooms, administrative offices, a refectory, and residences for priests and seminarians. Saint John's Chapel, built in 1899, includes artwork by Gonippo Raggi, a pipe organ, and notable acoustics. International seminarians and members of religious orders attend classes while residing with their respective houses of formation.
