The Licence - Lettres is a three-year bachelor's degree in French Literature and the Humanities offered at the Université de La Réunion in Saint-Denis, France. Annual tuition is 178 EUR, instruction is in French, and the programme starts in September. A Lettres degree offers a rigorous grounding in French and francophone literature, linguistics, and the broader humanities. Students read texts spanning different literary periods from the medieval era to the contemporary, engaging with poetry, prose, theatre, and other forms. Alongside literary history and criticism, courses typically cover French grammar and stylistics, rhetoric, translation, and often introduce comparative literature or philosophy. Students develop skills in close reading, textual analysis, academic argumentation, and clear written expression. Studying at the Université de La Réunion, in the culturally diverse environment of the French Indian Ocean island of Réunion, adds a francophone and postcolonial dimension that enriches engagement with French literary and linguistic heritage. The programme provides a broad humanistic education suited to a range of professional and academic paths. Graduates in Lettres commonly move into education and teaching, publishing, journalism, cultural administration, communication, and the arts. The analytical and writing skills gained through the degree are valued in many professional sectors. Continuing study at master's level in areas such as French studies, creative writing, linguistics, heritage studies, or education is a frequent next step for graduates seeking to deepen their expertise.
