Bachelor in Licence - Lettres

At Université de Tours, the tuition fee is 178 EUR per year.

French Literature and Humanities — Licence Lettres — is a three-year bachelor-level degree taught in French at the Université de Tours (37) in Tours, France, starting in September. Yearly tuition is 178 EUR. Lettres is the study of French and francophone literary traditions alongside the classical and modern humanistic disciplines. Students engage with texts ranging from ancient Greek and Latin literature through to contemporary French fiction, poetry, and drama. The programme develops advanced reading, analytical, and writing skills through close engagement with primary texts and critical scholarship. Core modules typically cover literary history, genre theory, stylistics and rhetoric, textual commentary, and the history of ideas. Students learn to analyse narrative structures, poetic forms, and dramatic conventions, and to situate works within their intellectual and historical contexts. Grammar, linguistics, and the history of the French language often feature as foundational components. Instruction is entirely in French, and the degree develops a high level of written and oral expression. Graduates work as teachers at secondary and higher levels, editors, journalists, copywriters, and cultural administrators. Many continue to a master's degree in French literature, creative writing, linguistics, or education. The three-year Licence builds the textual and analytical foundation that underpins any career requiring mastery of written expression.
