Bachelor in Licence - Lettres

At Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry, tuition costs 178 EUR per year.

The Licence - Lettres at the Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry in Montpellier, France, is a three-year bachelor's program taught in French with an annual tuition of 178 EUR and a September start. A Lettres (Literature) degree covers the study of written texts in French and, depending on the university, in other traditions as well. Students engage with literary history from the medieval period through to contemporary writing, analyzing works across poetry, prose, theatre, and essay forms. Coursework typically includes close reading and textual commentary, stylistics, narrative theory, and literary criticism alongside modules in linguistics and the history of the French language. Students develop strong skills in written argumentation and analysis, which underpin many professional contexts. Programs at this level also tend to include some philosophy of literature, comparative studies, and an introduction to research methods in the humanities. Graduates pursue careers in secondary and higher education, publishing, journalism, cultural communication, documentation, and the civil service. Teaching certification programs (CAPES, Agrégation) are a natural next step for students interested in secondary education. Many others continue into master's programs in literature, linguistics, editorial work, or cultural management. The Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry, located in a major university city in the south of France, offers this program within its humanities faculty.
