About the Program

The Master of Arts in Linguistics at the University of Göttingen is a four-semester programme that allows students to deepen knowledge of modern formal linguistics, with a primary focus on synchronic syntax and phonology. Diachronic questions and empirical work are also part of the curriculum. The programme conveys in-depth knowledge of descriptive and analytical theories and methods and develops the skills needed for independent and interdisciplinary scientific work across individual languages. Subject-specific study comprises 42 credits in modules covering descriptive linguistics, phonology, theory of language change, theoretical linguistics, empirical methods in linguistics, and linguistic research strategies. Module packets in other subjects are offered at 36 and 18 credits respectively. The programme is available in both the winter and summer semesters at the University of Göttingen in Göttingen.
