About the Program

The MSc in Marine Geosciences at the University of Bremen concentrates on the geoscientific dimensions of climate, resources, and technology in the marine environment. The programme covers the full range of marine geosciences — from sedimentology and petrology to geophysics and biogeochemistry, and from basic research to applied technology. Teaching is influenced by the research carried out at MARUM, the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, which organises its work across three areas: Ocean and Climate, Geosphere-Biosphere Interactions, and Sediment Dynamics. Connections with leading German marine research institutions in Bremen and Bremerhaven inform both teaching topics and methods. The programme runs over four semesters, starting in the winter semester. The first year is focused on teaching, with lectures, seminars, and projects in core subjects. Students choose three to four out of eight core subjects — biogeochemistry, climate change, environmental archives, marine geobiology, marine resources, marine technology, ocean crust evolution, and sedimentology — allowing them to build an individual profile. Up to four complementary modules add field and laboratory training, digital computing, and soft skills. In the second year, students complete a geoscientific project in the form of a marine survey, a GeoMedia project, or an external or international project. A research seminar prepares students for the Master's thesis, which occupies the fourth semester. The programme is at the University of Bremen in Bremen, Germany.
