    About the Program

Master i idrett og samfunnsvitenskap (MAIS) is a two-year, 120-ECTS master's programme within the humanities and social-science research field, offered in close contact with professional practice. Students choose one of four specialisation tracks: idrett og trenerrollen (sport and the coaching role), idrettspsykologi (sport psychology), Sport Management, and kultur og samfunn (culture and society); a fifth track, pedagogikk (pedagogy), is not accepting new admissions for the 2026/27 academic year.

The idrett og trenerrollen track gives advanced, interdisciplinary knowledge of coaching and skill development, combining theory and practice to understand how learning, development and performance are shaped in different sport contexts. The idrettspsykologi track specialises students in sport psychology for work in the sport or education sectors, or other contexts where physical activity and sport psychology are relevant. The Sport Management track trains students in organisation, leadership and marketing across voluntary, public and commercial sport contexts, integrating theory and practice including organisational leadership and marketing/communication, with an emphasis on collaboration with the labour market on research and development. The kultur og samfunn track examines the significance of sport and movement culture for society and the individual, integrating theory and practice from the humanities and social sciences in collaboration with government, private business and other public bodies.

Exchange is possible in the third semester with partner institutions including the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Malmö University (Sweden), Liverpool John Moores University and Plymouth Marjon University (UK), Charles University (Czechia), and University of Waikato (New Zealand).
