Master Informatique — Informatique et mathématiques discrètes (IMD)

Tuition costs 250 EUR per year.

Informatique et mathématiques discrètes (IMD), or computer science and discrete mathematics, is a track of the Master Informatique at Aix-Marseille Université in Marseille, France. This branch of computer science emphasizes the mathematical structures, such as graphs, combinatorics, logic, and algebraic structures, that underlie algorithm design and theoretical computer science. Students typically study algorithm analysis, complexity theory, graph theory, combinatorial optimization, and formal logic, developing the ability to reason rigorously about what computation can and cannot achieve efficiently. The discipline is closely tied to fields such as cryptography, network design, and optimization, since discrete mathematics provides the tools to model and solve problems involving finite, structured sets of objects rather than continuous quantities. Coursework often blends proof-based mathematics with programming exercises that implement and test the algorithms being studied, giving students both the theoretical grounding and the practical skill to apply discrete methods to real computational problems. Graduates from programs combining computer science and discrete mathematics commonly work as algorithm engineers, researchers, software developers in fields requiring strong theoretical foundations, or continue toward doctoral research in theoretical computer science or applied mathematics. The program is a 2-year master's degree delivered in French, with an inferred start date in September, based in Marseille, France, and yearly tuition of 250 EUR.

Aix-Marseille University is the largest multidisciplinary French-speaking university, hosting 80,000 students and 8,000 staff across five large campuses. It is a research-intensive institution known for its international outlook and commitment to academic excellence.
