Programme Profile

The M.Arch. in Architectural Design is the second-tier qualification, succeeding the Diploma in Design Foundation Studies and the B.Sc. (Hons) in Built Environment Studies, preparing graduates for an EU-accredited warrant to pursue a career as an Architect. The course structure conforms to the Bologna Process and to Article 46 of EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the Training of Architects.

Students receive a balance of theoretical knowledge in subjects relevant to architecture, manifested into practical architectural design workshops. In the final year, taught and research knowledge culminate in a Masters-level Dissertation and Synoptic Final Project, implementing independent research skills.

Career Prospects

Graduates satisfy the academic requirements for professional status in Malta, and for the title of Architect at European level under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. The qualification also provides a pathway to doctoral study.

How tuition works

Full-time postgraduate fees follow published bands: €10,800 a year for arts and business-related programmes, €13,400 for science-based ones, €14,400 for the Executive MBA, and €11,000 for doctorates. Part-time and extended versions of the same degrees spread the same total cost over more years, which is why their published annual figure is lower.

Entry Requirements (International Applicants)

Applicants must be in possession of one of the following:

First cycle degree in Built Environment Studies from the University of Malta, obtained with at least Second Class Honours
A qualification deemed by Senate to be comparable

Applicants must show, via transcript, that they completed the minimum required credits in the relevant thematic study-units; shortfalls of up to 4 ECTS may be accepted conditionally, and larger gaps may require a preparatory programme.

English Test Requirement

IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in each of Writing, Reading, Listening, Speaking); TOEFL iBT 95 overall / min. 24 Writing (pre-January-2026 scale) or 5 overall / min. 5 Writing (January-2026-onwards scale); or equivalent: Cambridge Advanced Certificate Grade C or better, Pearson PTE Academic 71 (min. 65 per element), Trinity ISE III Merit in all skills, or ISET Band 6. Results must be issued within 2 years of course commencement and be a Secure English Language Test (SELT).
