The Structural Engineering programme equips students with the knowledge and tools to take a central role in designing sustainable and climate-smart buildings. The curriculum is grounded in requirements for building technology and structural design of wooden structures for exceptionally demanding structures, and covers building mechanics and building physics to a level adequate for exceptionally demanding wooden structures. The programme meets the requirements of the Finnish Ministry of the Environment guidelines on the qualification of building designers (YM2/601/2015) and FISE's requirements and criteria for wooden structures, load-bearing structures in wood, and building physics. Additional topics include fire dimensioning, stiffening and sound technology in wooden structures, and climate footprint and lifecycle calculations of wooden buildings. Studies are structured for flexible learning parallel with full-time employment, preferably at an engineering company. A major part of the programme is conducted online one afternoon each week from September to May, combined with weekly self-study and teamwork. The two-year programme starts in September 2026 at Novia University of Applied Sciences in Raasepori.
