Master of Humanity and Environmental Science Program

National Dong Hwa University offers a Master of Humanity and Environmental Science Program in Eastern Taiwan, with instruction in English. This field combines the study of the natural environment with attention to the human dimensions of environmental issues, bringing together environmental science, ecology, and geography with perspectives drawn from the humanities and social sciences on how people relate to and are affected by the environments they inhabit. Students typically study ecological principles, environmental monitoring and assessment methods, and the physical processes that shape ecosystems and landscapes, alongside coursework examining how culture, history, ethics, and policy shape human interaction with the natural world. Topics commonly covered include conservation and biodiversity, land and water resource management, environmental impact assessment, and the social and cultural dimensions of environmental change, such as how communities perceive and respond to issues like pollution, habitat loss, or resource scarcity. Field-based learning is often a component of programs in this area, giving students direct experience observing and measuring environmental conditions, while classroom coursework builds skills in data analysis, environmental reporting, and policy evaluation. Because the field sits at the intersection of science and the humanities, students are typically encouraged to draw connections between empirical environmental data and broader questions about values, governance, and social responsibility toward the environment. A thesis or research project is commonly part of the degree, allowing students to investigate a specific environmental or human-environment question in depth. Graduates of programs combining humanity and environmental science pursue careers in environmental consulting and assessment, conservation and natural resource management, environmental education, government agencies focused on environmental policy, and nonprofit organizations working on conservation or environmental advocacy. The program's location in Eastern Taiwan, a region known for its natural landscapes, offers a relevant setting for environmental study, and English-language instruction supports an international student body.
