Law touches every facet of society, from resource management to defence and international trade. The Master of Laws deepens legal knowledge and develops the ability to analyse political and operational factors that shape legislation and policy, with particular focus on ocean-related issues. Career paths include barrister, lawyer, policy advisor in resource management, defence, foreign affairs and maritime trade. The degree is delivered over a single year of full-time study, or the equivalent part-time, and is organised around a core set of subjects in international law and policy, a specialised stream in maritime law, and a research project that tackles a real-world legal challenge. Study is supported by the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security, which provides links with government agencies, international businesses and NGOs across the Indo-Pacific, including the Royal Australian Navy. International students located offshore may enrol and study online. Graduates are prepared for roles such as maritime policy advisor, fisheries policy advisor or barrister.
